$13.7M HIV Infusion Fraud Draws Clinic Owner Conviction; Two Others Sentenced in Separate HIV Medicare Scheme

T&R Rehabilitation Professional Corp. owner, Modesto de la Vega and his wife, Vitoria, pled guilty friday to conspiring to pay illegal kickbacks to patients in exchange for the opportunity to bill Medicare for unnecessary HIV-infusion therapy services. The Vegas, together with co-conspirators billed the already-strapped Medicare system for more than $13 million. This conviction comes on the heels of the massive healthcare fraud round-up exactly one week before. In its announcement of the Vegas’ guilty plea, DoJ also announced that the Humes brothers (whose convictions were previously reported by FraudBlawg) received multi-year sentences from and were ordered to pay restitution by U.S. District Judge Ursulla Ungaro in the Southern District of Florida for a similar yet unrelated HIV-infusion clinic fraud.
