According to a May 5, 2009 Department of Justice Press Release, Medicare paid a group of Miami-based con-artists approximately $3 million for scam medical clinics in Atlanta, Georgia before discovering the fraud. U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias states that the clinics consisted of a leased building and bank accounts but essentially nothing else— no operations, no employees, no equipment and no patients.
