Last Wednesday — on the eve of the house passage of healthcare reform — the floor looked nearly empty as representatives John Garamendi (D-California), Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois), Rush Holt (D-New Jersey), Dina Titus (D-Nevada), and Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) discussed their wide-ranging views on healthcare fraud and how to deal with it. Holt and Schakowsky debated the size of the fraud problem speaking in diametrically opposite phrases of “a little bit” versus “a lot of money” (e.g. last year’s $2.3 billion Pfizer settlement), but what was more interesting than the points the four reps tried to make with one another was the echo of crickets coming from the empty seats. It seems no one wants to hear or think about the massive fraud, waste, and abuse that plagues the system.
