Power Wheelchair Fraudster Sentenced to Prison and to Pay $110,000 in Restitution

Maria Nela Moreno of Fresno, California, was sentenced today to 12 months in prison. Moreno visited low-income homes and solicited Medicare-beneficiary information in exchange for unneccessary medical equipment, such as power wheelchairs. At their homes, Moreno convinced seniors to provide their Medicare beneficiary numbers, scanned them into her portable scanner, and passed them along to fraudulent medical clinics which used them to submit false claims to Medicare. According to the DoJ, Moreno was paid a kickback for each power wheelchair that was fraudulently billed to Medicare by the DME companies.
