Dr. Stanley Gallagher, the City of Wheaton, Minnesota, and Wheaton Community Hospital have agreed to pay $846,461 to settle allegations they knowingly made false claims to Medicare for unreasonable and unnecessary medical admissions, says DoJ. More specifically, from 1998-2004 WCH admitted patients and kept others admitted in acute care when doing so was not medically necessary and then falsely billed Medicare for the cost of these admissions, according to allegations by Dr. Steven Radkenovich, a former colleague of Gallagher. Radkenovich filed the case as a whistleblower under the qui tam provision of the False Claims Act and will receive $203,150 in the settlement.
