Wheelchairs Delivered, But Patient's Don't Want Them; Medicare Picks Up Tab

A Mobile, Alabama, doctor’s office employee has agreed to plead guilty to Medicare fraud with a hearing set next week reports the Mobile Press-Register. The secretary/office assistant fraudulently provided patient records to a Kentucky-based medical supply company — sometimes signing as the treating phsycian. The company, United Home Healthcare, then solicited the patients, promising them free wheelchairs. An employee for United Home Health Care previously pleaded guilty to the scheme. In many cases, report the defendants’ lawyers, wheelchairs were shipped without the patients’ knowledge and to patients who neither needed nor wanted a wheelchair — all with the goal of fraudulently billing Medicare.
